The number of criminal activities has risen by leaps and bounds in many societies. While there are many contributing factors for this trend, I would argue that the government could take measures to tackle this problem. There are many reasons which propel a person to commit a crime. Firstly, I am of the opinion that poverty and unemployment are chief precursors to law violation. Earning a pile of money has been one of the strongest motivations for the less fortunate to commit a crime. That the rate of offences among underprivileged people is higher than the upper class ones is an undeniable fact. Secondly, some movies and video games provoke violence amongst individuals especially the youngsters. The youth of today mostly spend their leisure time watching the television programs which are negatively affect them since they depict the life of criminals and gangsters in order to become more interesting and attracting more viewers. Finally, many a country around the world, albeit with financial power, suffers from lack of law enforcement and corruption in the judiciary helping gangster groups to escape justice. However, many steps could be taken to diminish the crime rate. To start with, the government should put alleviation of poverty and provision of a safety net for the disadvantaged at the center of their campaign. Educating people and creating jobs for them, the state can give citizens the chance of earning a living by their own capabilities. In addition, there should be stricter regulation for television programs in order to making make them more suitable and beneficial for members of society. Moreover, the government should introduce new legislation and fines to punish officials who abuse their power/control the country. Imposing more severe punishment could serve as a deterrent and prevent crimes. In conclusion, there are many underlying reasons for the existence of crimes in a society but I believe that the aforementioned measures could flatten the curve of the crime rate. |
