Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning a foreign language at primary school rather than secondary school. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages? Advances of the communication system makes learning a foreign language a priority for children and it has become a compulsory course in many countries around the world. Some educationalists argue that it is so beneficial to start learning a foreign language from an early age at schools. Although this trend has inevitable drawbacks such as confusing children and put a lot of pressure on them, I opine that it helps them to learn better. Children in primary school are in acquisition phase of language, thereby having the potential to absorb a foreign language deeply. Imitating others’ behavior, children are capable of learning words with correct pronunciation and spelling. Foreign language classes can be more interesting for children in comparison with other courses because it contains songs, short stories and other attractive teaching aids, I myself had been looking through my English books during the term because they were attractively colorful and full of information about other nations and their customs. Some linguists believe that the process of learning a foreign language shall be similar to the one which children go through to learn their mother tongue, to be more specific children should be taught different sentences and repeat using them for different situations instead of memorizing grammar forms and vocabularies separately. from this point of view children in primary school are more capable of memorizing language subconsciously. Learning a foreign language in primary school has some disadvantages. Firstly, it put a lot of pressure on students because they have to put effort into learning the second language. Secondly, there is a possibility that children become confused and the new language interfere with their mother language which they do not still master it. Thirdly, children in primary school mostly do not have a deep perception of life and as a result they do not realize the need for learning a new language and this will make them less motivated to dedicate themselves to learning. In conclusion, children’s learning ability is undeniable and it tempted educational experts to start teaching them a foreign language at primary school to flourish their talent. Although learning a new language from a young age may put a lot of unnecessary pressure on them, they can learn it more easily and effectively.
