Some people say that the only reason for learning a foreign language is in order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. As we can probably see around us, our friends, relatives or colleagues embark on learning a foreign language for the sake of studying in or immigrating to another country. They are the most direct purposes of learning a second language. However, a person whose first goal is not travelling to or working in another country can also benefit from learning a new language in multiple ways. A lot of employers put foreign language skills among top-ten most important recruitment criteria and certainly a bilingual person can contribute to different areas of a company in which monolingual peers cannot. Apart from considering mastering a new language as a career skill, it has several cognitive benefits. The exercises contributing to learning a second language can help a person in improving improve memory, concentration and active listening skills. If they are not enough, it helps to stave off mental ageing and cognitive decline. Bilingual people will suffer less from lack of memory as they get older/age. It is worthwhile to mention that one of the most interesting benefits of mastering a new language is during an abroad trip. Monolingual people also can enjoy sightseeing but not only does a bilingual traveler enjoy in that way but he/she can communicate with the host citizens and get familiar with their cultures. In conclusion, a bilingual individual can enjoy a lot of benefits among which the most direct ones are making him/her able for to working in or travelling to a foreign country but there are a lot more like connecting to and communicating with foreign people and cultures, improving cognitive skills, job promotion and other areasetc. that all of them which can lead to more self-confidence.
