Using animals to test the safety of cosmetics or drugs used for medical reasons is never acceptable. To what extent do you agree with this statement? I am absolutely positive that this is nothing save lack of compassion. Nowadays with so many advances facing us in almost every field including medicine and the cosmetic industry, there is a heated debate as to whether moral standards are properly observed or not. By the same token, there are questions as to what institutions are liable for setting and enforce enforcing regulations on animal experiments. My firm conviction is that some of these clinical trials are nothing short of inhumanity and ruthlessness, hence the significance of seeking alternative option. With respect to the advocates of animal research, they arguably draw attention to this disputable fact that human health and lives supersede than those of animals. For this reason, they justify conducting investigation on laboratory animals. Having said that, it ignores the fact that whereas it takes a plethora of energy and time to discover alternatives, it might be well worth the effort in the future not only for animals, but also for humankind at large. Regarding to the alternative option, I would like to point out to in vitro experiments as opposed to in vivo ones, by which I mean studies that are carried out in the laboratory and outside of the animals’ bodies. To bring this topic to light we need to get acquainted with a discipline namely tissue engineering. In this field of study artificial tissues are made in the laboratory which are similar to those of the human body’s tissues to a great extent. For instance, cosmetic companies are able to test their products on artificial pieces of skin. Likewise, pharmaceuticalcompanies could examine the active ingredient of drugs on special synthetic tissues. To summarize, I strongly believe that since the ultimate responsibility to safeguard the environment and its creatures lies with the public either directly or through its government, we should enact some new legislation on animal experiments and spare no effort to minimize animal studies irrespective of however difficult it is.
