Some people argue that individuals can do nothing to improve the environment, and only governments and large companies can make a difference. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion? It is true that the world in which we live has been threatened by a combination of environmental hazards. While some argue that just governments and corporates are capable of making it better, it seems a complementary partnership between them and members of society would be more likely to yield more positive results. Firstly, the impact of many small steps which can be practiced by every individual should not be overlooked. By reducing the use of plastic bags in everyday life, for example, not only could every person simply contribute to less polluted lands and oceans, but also it would lead to less extraction of crude oil, which has been the main raw material for the production of plastic and a major pollutant of the earth. Another measure restating the beneficial effect of individuals’ habits in preserving the environment is people’s diet. The intensive use of green lands for producing meat has been proven to have adverse environmental impacts, so if individuals cut down meat and switch to a plant-based diet, we would witness less destruction of natural resources. At the same time, governments and corporates can both offer incentives and facilitate measures for people which result in a superior environment. They can invest in an alternative source of energy, so these forms of energy become cheaper for consumers. If sustainable energy forms such as solar and wind, which currently are offered by at significantly higher prices, were more affordable, it they would be more likely to be consumed by the a higher proportion of the populace. Moreover, governments can levy taxes on fossil fuels; as a result, it would render renewable energy as a more attractive source of power. What these policies would lead to is a cleaner and more livable environment. In conclusion, I am holding on to the view that people, in many ways, can help attain a better environment, just as governments and large corporations can. In fact, the cooperation between them, if properly devised, can hugely accelerate the process.
