CUsing animals to test the safety of cosmetics or drugs used for medical reason is never acceptable. To what extent do you agree with this statement? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Nowadays, despite the efforts being put into justifying the value of exploiting animals for medical and cosmetic intentions, there is still a bitter conflict as to whether this approach is a rationale and ethical one. As far as I am concerned, the use of laboratory animals as experimental subjects can be acceptable in the medical field but not in cosmetic. Given that under no circumstances do animal deserve to suffer, skeptics declare that not only does animal testing violate the bioethics rules, but it also should be considered illegal and be put out of use. Moreover, they might refer to alternatives to animal testing, including cell and tissue culture, by which it is possible to replace and refine this method. On the other hand, advocates might support it with a couple of reasons. Before carrying on, it is noteworthy that this issue in the medical context is poles apart form that in the cosmetic context in that while the former can be justified under rigorous precautions, the latter cannot be given any reasonable grounds. Animal usage for testing beauty products is a direct repercussion of the consumerism culture and fashion. This is why it can be utterly omitted. By contrast, as for their usage for examining drugs, we must bear in mind that had scientists not experimented on animals, a considerable number of human beings would have succumbed to various fatal diseases. Firstly, although alternative methods do exist, animal testing is still the most accessible and fiscally acceptable one since other methods are extremely expensive as well as not widely available in many laboratories. Secondly, up to the present time, mammalian species can provide the closest environment to human physiology, hence their extensive use over cell or tissue culture. Thirdly, as against the widely held belief about the cruelty of these experiments, they are being conducted under strict ethical rules with the aim of mitigating animals’ suffering. the main conclusion to be drawn is that even though animal testing is under fire, and probably will remain an ethical dilemma, in this write’s view not only can it be justified for on medical grounds, but it is also still the most sensible approach. 356 words
