Sending criminals to prison is not the best method of dealing with them. Education and job training are better ways to help them. Do you agree or disagree? People hold varying opinions as to how criminals should be dealt with. It seems not only is putting them in jail far from the best option, but also it raises many adverse effects, so other measures such as educating and preparing offenders for a career lead to superior results and assist them in becoming a good member of society. There are many reasons why jailing is neither effective nor in the best interest of society. Firstly, it would educate prisoners who commit petty crimes in the ways of professional criminals. While serving their time in the prison, they would inevitably be locked up and surrounded by inmates who are in jail for serious offenses, and it might turn an otherwise amateur into a skillful offender capable of committing heinous crimes without even getting caught. Secondly, these days, the prison seems too lenient a sentence. With all the humanitarian concerns being in place, individuals doing their time access a wide variety of luxuries including warm food, cable TV, and even video games, to name but a few, many of which are not guaranteed for the ordinary citizens of a country. Finally, maintaining a detention facility is prohibitively expensive and often is considered a huge burden on the tax payers’ shoulders. The state should pay for security including prisoners and staff workers, meals, prisoners’ healthcare to keep the center working. Alternatively, providing criminals with education and vocational training has proven to be a more purposeful pursuit to eradicate the root causes of crime. Many people who engage in criminal activities belong to the poor demographics, and these people, if they had the ability to work and earn a living by their own, would less likely engage in illegal actions. Moreover, rarely could any punitive measures mitigate the problem of crime in a society. On the contrary, by giving the offenders knowledge and skills, a community can assure them, despite their unacceptable behavior, how valuable they are/could be and how eager the community is to release them back to society. In conclusion, I am holding on to the view that jailing has never been a remedy for the issue of crime, and clearly, we should take both educational and career-related methods into consideration.
