Some people think that the best way to reduce crime is to give longer prison sentences. Others, however, believe there are better alternative ways of reducing crime. Discuss both views and give your opinion. Given the question of reduction in crime rates the role of prisons or some alternative ways can be highlighted. Yet there remains some disagreement as to whether lengthy prison sentences should be considered in an optimistic or pessimistic way. While there are certainly valid arguments to the contrary, I personally, believe that the drawbacks of such a trend outweigh its advantages. On the one hand, it is indisputable that long term incarceration is able to reduce crime intensification in society. Affected severely byto being arrested again and moving to the jail over a the long period of time, lawbreakers might find it frightening to commit a crime for the next time. Equally or even more importantly, it is believed that with longer incarceration, the rehabilitation programs can be more effective. As a result, the prisoners have access to this chance to become rehabilitated, hence, the reduction of criminal acts. Also, this it can be clear that in cases of criminals whose crimes are beyond the pale, long period imprisonment can be fruitful in terms of diminishing the crime rate and making society safer. On the other hand and as far as I am concerned, there lie some alternative ways which are able to reduce the rate of committing crimes. At the heart of the matter is education. That expenses related to the prison industry can take a heavy toll on society is inevitable, so if the significant part of these astronomical costs could be reallocated into educational affairs, society would be provided with better educational and cultural infrastructure to prevent people from flirting with crime. Moreover, certain percentages of such costs can be employed in prevention-related measures such as substance abuse treatment and the mental health treatment. In the societal terms, although focusing on making society safer for dwellers, imprisonment poses tremendous social cost when the youth find it demanding to find a job due to criminal record which can lead to unemployment and related crises and gradually the increasing rate of crime. As a result of staggering inefficiency in judicial authorities of many countries, even for small street crimes, criminals are sent to prisons which leads to grave consequences. Unlike this issue, if such criminals were provided with efficient rehabilitation centers and community services, better choices would be available to them it would made better choices for them to give positive outcomes back to society, hence, an improved character for them which causes reduction in reducing criminal acts. In conclusion, however although in some special cases such as assaulting and murder long imprisonment should be recommended, for many particularly good reasons some alternative ways instead of incarceration should be prioritized to affect society positively in terms of reducing criminals.
